Why Website Maintenance is Critical For Your Websites Security

Having a website or a blog comes with a lot of responsibility. If you’re just uploading content and forgetting about it for a month, your site won’t be successful. Regular website maintenance is a must if you want your site to remain relevant, and in order to get the most out of it - you need to care for it, other wise you won’t generate very many recurring customers unfortunately.

Why is website maintenance so important?
If you’ve been on a website where a link is broken, or the last post was from 2007, or maybe they’ve changed numbers and the phone number on the site is disconnected - then you might understand a little bit about why maintenance is so important. If people see that your site is unloved and neglected, then that’s how they’ll treat it too. You have about 3 seconds to grab their attention, and it’s pretty clear that the blurry photos you took on your old 2000’s Nokia just aren’t going to cut it in this day and age. With updated images, information, and communication - your website will be transformed every time you get a new visitor, which will entail people to want to come back for more!

Another reason is why website maintenance is so important, is because if you don’t use any security systems or even back up your site often, then your site is more at risk to becoming hacked. If you do get hacked, they can do anything from sending spam emails to people without you knowing, they can change all your information, lock you out of your own site, and even take the entire website down and remove all traces of it. It is really crucial that you keep all software updated, so there’s a lesser chance of this happening to you.

What kind of content should I add?
The answer to this is, ANYTHING. If you are announcing new products, a sale, or you’ve got news on your social media, or you want to modify the navigation by adding in a new page - then do it! People will want to see new things each time they visit your site, so if you keep up to date with any new announcements of really anything that’s going on to do with your business/site, then post it on there.

If you were recently featured in another blog post, a news article, a podcast or you could even be in your friends YouTube video, be sure to share it on your site and link it to your social platforms so people will see how involved you are and will want to follow you to see more. The more updated your content is, and the more frequently it get’s updated - the more people will notice you and the more times you will pop up in their feed, which in itself generates more visitors on a regular basis.

Will SEO be affected when I update?
There are instances where an update can happen within a day and others, it could be 2-3 weeks later. Google typically deep crawls a site a minimum of once a week but it does not guarantee that it will crawl all pages when it does, so some pages or information may have been missed in the latest crawls. The “Googlebot” that crawls the web is constantly searching for web pages that are new or updated and then adds the fresh content to the Google index. If you update your content often with reliable and valuable information, then you have a better chance of Google ranking your site higher with each update.

When do I need to back up my site?
Backing up your website is something that you should be doing constantly, especially if you are the type that uses the online interface of your store or blog to make changes. Things definitely happen, and even though the web hosting company may say that they back up the sites on their servers, their last back up could have been before your last edit. If their server crashes, or maybe your site gets hacked, then your edits will be done if the web hosting company restored what they had on their back up. It is so much better to be safe than sorry, and if you lose a months load of editing, then you're going to regret not taking a couple minutes to back up your site.

Should I update my software?
Most websites are built on a content management system, and if you take Wordpress for example: They constantly update, improve and make their platform more secure quite frequently. When they release a new version, it is an absolute must that you update your site too. Failing to update, leaves you more vulnerable and less protected.

Plugins work the same way because all kinds of updates that you add to your site, are forms of protection. So be aware of any new software updates that come your way, and ensure you take the time to update them.

How do I know if I’m being hacked?
In the last week alone, we have had many people call and tell us that their site has been hacked. It happens a lot more than you think, and more often than not, the hackers don’t usually announce themselves when they’re in your site. You could be infected and not even know about it. Setting up a regular monitoring schedule and security measures will ensure that if you do happen to get infected, then you are able to fix this site errors fast and efficiently.

So, go ahead and add an article, an image or just make some change on your site to get noticed. The easiest and most effective way to stay fresh is to add a blog on your site and continue to add articles that will get noticed by your viewers. If they comment on those articles, that counts as an update on your site. So, write something that will get the attention to begin helping with your frequent updates.
